January Stashbuster Finishes

Jan 31, 2020

We're one month down and I've been putting a small dent in my stash the last few weeks, have you??

I'm going to go over some of the projects I've made and talk about how much I used from my stash for each project. The totals kind of surprised me! Click here to read all about my Stash Busting challenge if you're new here :)

Now, let's take a look at what I've been working on...

Pillow Case for Daughter

My first real project for 2020 was making this pillow case for my pre-teen daughter using some fabrics from the December 2019 Cotton Cuts Modern Maker box. This pillow case used the equivalent of exactly 1 yard of fabric.

Charity Pillow Cases

Shown here is one of 5 flannel pillow cases I made in January for our sewing club's 2020 charity project. We'll be donating handmade pillow cases to a local organizations that helps children displaced from their homes. I used 5 yards of flannel for these, and shown here is the NASA flannel line by Riley Blake Designs.

Bauble Pod

One of my favorite quick-make projects is my Bauble Pod hack for the Popcorn Pouch pattern. This keychain sized pouch made using Riley Blake Designs basics (solids + Blossom basic) using a little less than a fat eighth of fabric, one zipper, some SF101, and one key ring all from my stash.

Popcorn Pouch Set

February brings two events for me centered around my popular Popcorn Pouch pattern. First, my Meet & Greet at Dabble & Stitch in Columbus, OH and second, the zipper class I'm teaching at the Perry County Sewcial Club monthly meeting. I'll be bringing this set of pouches (and more) to both events.

To make an entire set of 4 Popcorn Pouches, I used cuts from 6 fat quarters, 4 zippers, one yard of SF101, and one key ring from my stash. The fat quarters did have scraps left over, some really small and some a bit larger.

Easy Half Hexie Quilt

My favorite finish for the month, by far. You can get the free tutorial on my blog for this quilt and make one yourself. I used 16 fat quarters for the top, 5 yards backing (with a bit leftover), and ½ yard binding from my stash for this quilt.

This was also my first completed UFO finish for my guilds 2020 UFO Challenge. I started this quilt in Fall of 2019, and thanks to my friend Megan, finally got it quilted up and finished this year.

Box of Hearts Quilt

Last but not least, I have worked all month long on my Valentine's Day quilt. I'm using the Box of Hearts pattern from Cluck Cluck Sew and a self curated bundle of 24 fat quarters from my own stash.

So far I have all blocks cut, but only 23 sewn together. Im arranging them on my design wall as I sew and choosing the color combo for each block one at a time. It's a bit slower of a process than Im used to but I'm enjoying the way it's turning out.

End of the Month Thoughts:

I think I've done well for the beginning of the year and my first month of true stash busting. My girl friends and I took an annual quilty trip to Ohio Amish Country, which you can read about here, and I spent less than usual but still more than I wanted to. I had always factored this trip into my plan to spend less this year and made decisions to buy only based on what I truly needed for a future or current project.

You can view my latest YouTube Video here and see the projects in more detail :)

Totals:

I used approx. 23.5 yards of fabric, 5 zippers, just over 1 yard of SF101 interfacing, and two key rings from my stash this month. Since I don't really pay attention to thread usage (maybe I should?) I can't say the total for that at the moment but everything else seems to be accounted for.

Are you participating in the Stash Buster challenge this year? I'd love to know how you're doing. You can leave a comment here or find me @amistabaker on Instagram!
