Happy New Year! In 2020 I am going to be challenging myself to use more of my stash and buy less fabric / patterns / notions unless I absolutely need them. There aren't any strict rules or deadlines to meet, so if you're up for joining me and keeping yourself accountable read below!
Stash Buster 2020 Guidelines
First, I'm not forcing myself to finish anything by specific dates. What I am going to do is start each month off by choosing one or more from the following list...
"This month...."
- I will make one quilting pattern from my collection and not buy a new one.
- I will make one bag making or other sewing pattern from my collection and not buy a new one.
- I will only use from my stash and not buy new fabric.
- I will make a scrappy project from my scrap bins.
- I will use a notion, ruler or thread color that I have bought but is still packaged and unused.
- When I feel the need to buy new, I will "shop my stash" for a similar item.
- I will have a strict no-buy and not purchase ANYTHING new for the whole month.
- I will make a charity project or something to gift to someone from my stash.
Alternately, if you're someone who makes things more frequently or less frequently, you could do this challenge each week, or stretch it out to each quarter of the year. It's totally up to you!
Quarterly Check-Ins
To keep myself accountable I'm going to be checking in and reviewing my progress to see what I've used each time. Below is an example...
For the month of April, I made 2 bags and used 2 yards of fabric from my stash. I also made one quilt and used a fat quarter bundle from my stash, 2 yards background fabric, and had to buy a 5 yard backing.

See how this works? No dates or strict deadlines. We're just being more conscious of how much we buy and trying to limit unnecessary purchases just for the sake of the fear of missing out.
I encourage you to set up a spreadsheet or write your progress in a notebook / planner, or use this simple printable I've created. (download link below)
These sheets contains 3 rows and can be printed multiple times. Wether you're someone who will do this monthly or every few months, this sheet should work for you.

Ok, let's try to buy less fabrics, and use more my stash ;))
ReplyDeleteThis was one of my goals last year and I was more successful than I thought I could be but I still have plenty in my stash to use! I’d love to follow along. ☺️
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of recording not only the projects completed, but the purchases required. I think the simple task of having to add a purchase to a log might help prevent me from those impulse purchases. Thanks!
