Happy Sunday! I hope all of my U.S. friends had a great Thanksgiving! Today I want to share with you an adorable draw string bag I made yesterday using a couple different tutorials.
Earlier this year I participated in a Bonnie & Camille Christmas In July block swap and I have been going back & forth with myself about just what exactly I should make with my blocks. I finally decided to try out a bag, as I am thinking of replacing our stocking with bags this year - you can fit more in them (and various shaped items, unlike a stocking) and I just love the look of them sitting under the tree!
One of these blocks can easily make the front of a drawstring bag by adding a few borders. Keep reeding to see how I did this!
The Details
For those of you who may have participated in this swap or just want to make a similar bag, I've detailed below how I added my borders to make this tree block the right size for the bag. Also - these are free tutorials listed below and I am NOT taking credit for them at all - just want to share!.
My fabrics are primarily Bonnie & Camille with some Sweetwater mixed in. You can easily whip up one of these bags in a couple hours, especially once you get the hang of making the easy Christmas Tree blocks!
Note: Each bag finished at approx. 10" high x 7" wide but Jeni has a great pattern you can purchase to make larger or smaller bags as well! There are 8 sizes total.

You will need..
- One finished Modern Christmas Tree Block by Diary of a Quilter
- The Lined Drawstring Bag instructions from In Color Order
- One 7.5" x 3.5" piece of border fabric
- Two 12.5" x 1" strips of border fabric
*Measurements are in inches. A 1/4" seam is used throughout.
Tip: Make a "short" tree using the free tutorial from Diary of a Quilter so the tree top isn't cut off by the seam allowance or from trimming down your finished block.
Instructions...
- Add your 7.5" x 3.5" border strip to the BOTTOM of your tree block.
- Add one 12.5" x 1" strip to each side of your tree block (left and right). Note that nothing is added to the top of the block.
- Trim block to exactly 10.5" wide x 12.5" tall.
- Use instructions on InColorOrder.com to create the rest of your drawstring bag, using your newly made tree panel as one of the main exterior pieces.
I hope this helped, and if you make a bag like mine I'd love to see it! Tag me @amistabaker on Instagram :) Happy Holidays!
Amista, so adorable! Thank you for the links to tutorials!
